THE MDT APPROACH
Coordinated MDT care offers numerous advantages, including increased patient satisfaction, earlier diagnosis, faster implementation of guideline-concordant care, increased access to curative-intent treatments, and improved overall survival.1,3 However, most community centers do not have an adequate range of specialities represented to have a full MDT and therefore most patient cases are not discussed by a full MDT.4 Implementing MDT care can also be challenging due to logistical barriers, including5:
- Conflicting schedules among MDT members
- Inefficient communication systems
- Limited resources, such as space, staff, and technology
These challenges highlight the urgent need for improved MDT coordination. It is important to ensure that all available specialists with a role on the team are invited to MDT meetings and that meetings happen regularly either in-person or virtually.4
As treatment goals naturally evolve throughout a patient’s journey, continuous MDT involvement is vital to maintain optimal care and alignment throughout the entire treatment journey. By maintaining a collaborative focus, MDTs can effectively adapt to changes in the patient's condition and treatment landscape, optimizing outcomes at every stage of care.5
